Women on Walls is a campaign by Accenture Ireland in partnership with the Royal Irish Academy that seeks to make women leaders in Science, Technology and the Arts visible through a series of commissioned portraits that will create a lasting cultural legacy for Ireland in 2016.

The genesis of the idea came to Eithne Harley and Michelle Cullen during a visit to the Royal Irish Academy (RIA), one of Ireland’s foremost institutions for learning and academic excellence. Not a single portrait of a woman adorns the walls of the institution that dates back over 230 years. Following discussions with the CEO of the RIA, Laura Mahoney, it was agreed we would partner to develop a unique collection of portraits.

The project, which is being managed by our partners Business to Arts, will see Accenture commissioning five portraits of leading female academics to recognise their achievements and inspire future generations. The finished artworks will be on public display in the RIA.

The five portraits will consist of individual portraits of the first four female Members of the RIA, elected in 1949. The fifth portrait will be a group portrait of eight female scientists, who are recipients of the European Research Council Starter Grants 2012 – 2015 and have been chosen as representatives of a generation of outstanding young female scientists working in Ireland today.

We are promoting this campaign on Social Channels and will continue to push messages throughout the lifetime of the campaign. The next milestone being the announcement of the chosen Artist(s).

This campaign supports our STEM and Diversity initiatives while leaving a permanent cultural legacy in Ireland to inspire future generations.
