Abbott: Bringing Science to life for Students during National Science Week
National Science Week was once again another exciting activity on Abbott’s calendar across all nine sites in Ireland this year. Abbott supported a variety of events, ranging from the Abbott Fund programmes Family Science and Operation Discovery, Abbott Discovery Day in Longford for the Midlands Science Festival, and over 100 children of employees visited our vascular plant in Clonmel and undertook a range of fun experiments onsite.
The Abbott Fund programme Family Science provides students an opportunity to learn about science and innovation through fun hands-on experiments. It also provides a platform for students and their parents and guardians to participate together and start thinking about science together. The purpose of events like Family Science is to spark enthusiasm about STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) among young people. Abbott’s nutrition plant in Cootehill hosted Operation Discovery. This Abbott Fund programme brought students from the local secondary school onto the Abbott site. Abbott scientists and engineering from the site in Cootehill guided the students through hands-on lab experiments that our scientists use in their daily work. Operation Discovery aims to increase interest for students to study STEM and related careers.
Abbott Family Science and other Abbott STEM education programmes have been running in Ireland for the last 10 years, and in total over 11,500 parents, students and teachers have participated in that time. Sinéad Hickey, CSR manager for Abbott said, “At Abbott, we strive to support and encourage the young people of our community in their scientific education. By leveraging Abbott’s expertise in innovative engineering, research and development, we believe that by inspiring the young people of today we can produce the scientific leaders of tomorrow.”
