Engineers Work Together to Inspire Local Children
Volunteers teamed up with Pupils from Holycross National School and Scoil Ursula to build the roller coasters and in the process learn about working together and taking advantage of different skills to create innovative inventions.
Hosted at Blackrock Castle Observatory, the event was part of an Engineers Week campaign that saw 30 PM Group volunteers visiting over 20 schools in Cork city and county. They reached out to over 1,300 boys and girls from 7 to 17 years, helping them discover that engineering is all around us and offers many career choices.
Said Chris O’Donnell, Mechanical Engineer “I got involved with this programme because I want to show children and young people that not being a maths genius doesn’t mean you can’t become an Engineer!”
“Girls aren’t often aware of the opportunities that an engineering career can bring. Hopefully STEPs can get young people, and girls in particular, thinking about the world in terms of engineering and what can be achieved through it” Added Siobhan Palmer, Civil/Structural Engineer.
“I was eager to volunteer for STEPs and Engineers Week to give young people a real insight into the world from my perspective. It’s been a brilliant experience that inspires children to get involved in Engineering and Science.” Said Eoin Keller, Process Engineer.
