PwC and Business in the Community Ireland (BITCI) launched the 3rd Edition of the Low Carbon Pledge Annual Report; ‘Business Working Together for a Low Carbon Future’ on Thursday, 10th June. In March, BITCI changed the ambition of the Low Carbon Pledge, which now asks all its signatories to align their carbon reduction targets to what science says is necessary to limit global warming to 1.5°C. This level of commitment aligns with the Paris Agreement and ensures all businesses play their part in decarbonising their entire carbon footprint.
62 of Ireland’s largest businesses are working towards setting Science-Based Targets by 2024, and this report, in conjunction with PwC, will show the progression of these companies towards setting their targets and the work that they are doing to achieve them. 2021 is the year for Climate Action to take centre stage, as we prepare to cut Global emissions in half by the end of this decade. The challenge in front of us is enormous, and with Global Leaders meeting later this year at COP26 in Glasgow, we hope to see further binding commitments made to put us firmly on the trajectory required to meet the Paris Agreement.
The road ahead will have its challenges, but it is also one filled with opportunity, as we design and develop new ways of working and living to align with a green, more sustainable future.
